A renovation project for residential in suburbs of Tokyo.
The existing plan is a typical residential plan in Japan, which locates corridor at center. This composition minimizes a corridor connecting from an entrance and maximize main rooms, so it feels very narrow of corridor. A material change on the floor between rooms probably affects to easily recognize a size of rooms.
Therefore, we proposed to change floor materials not between rooms but between functions. By separately thinking of the boundaries of material and space, we intend to make feel space bigger and change activities which may happens in between rooms. Each room actually can be changed their size by using sliding doors. To overlap materials and partitions according to each functions creates a new way of living within the typical plan.
